Black Jack is possibly one of the most popular games played in betting houses. Blackjack is also referred to as "twenty one" or Chemin de Fer. The game is a mix of luck and ability coupled with decision-making. The card game has evolved over a period of time. Players have specialized in certain abilities like "card counting," which allows them to turn the edge in the game in the players direction. The card game has been in existence since the 1700s. References can be found in historical documents to a card game referred to as "vingt-et-un," which means 21 in French, and is thought of as the ancestor to blackjack.

The game was originally not so well-liked in the u.s.. This led to the betting houses attempting a number of features like offering a reward in case of a ten to one payout, if the player had a "black" jack and an ace of spades. The jack could be either the jack of spades or clubs. After the game got popular, the reward pay out quickly disappeared from the game.

Any hand which reaches a sum of 21 is considered a winner. The total should not be in excess of twenty-one, in which case the hand is said to be "bust." The target of any player is to beat the dealer. If the blackjack player and the croupier both have the identical hand value, it is called "push" (a tie), with not either the black jack player nor the dealer coming away with a win on the hand.
